Why We Planted the First Seeds

Maren first had the idea for Kids Garden when she set out to find a secure, stimulating, nurturing childcare environment for her son -one that didn't require cumbersome contracts or hefty monthly fees.

It didn't exist. So she created it.

Putting her Masters in Education and holistic health degrees to work, Maren built an all-new playcare from the ground up. She designed it for the children, of course: a magical, whimsical place where young minds could explore what it means to be a kid. But she made parents a priority, too, by providing plenty of flexible options so they could drop in as needed.

After years of traveling the world, hiking her way through national parks, farming, teaching and entrepreneuring, Maren is putting her vast array of skills to work for the people who matter most in our communities-the little ones. Today, the original seeds of Kids Garden have blossomed into a thriving, growing community with numerous locations and more on the way...and an open door policy for parents and family in need of a safe, educational playspace where kids are excited to be.

Hi, I’m Maren Anderson-Moore and I am the owner/operator of Kids Garden Charleston. I discovered a large need for childcare when trying to find a safe, stimulating, secure, and nourishing environment for my son. I saw an opportunity to combine my three greatest passions—education, the environment and holistic health—and help fellow parents in the process. Kids learn best through play and Kids Garden is a learning center designed just for that. It's a community space where parents can feel confident taking their kids, and where kids get excited about learning.

Ms. Kimi is excited to introduce Houston to Kids Garden! After a career in Human Resources, Kimi understands the stress and demands of a busy work and family schedule. She witnessed many working parents pause or forego their careers due to a lack of flexible childcare options, especially during the pandemic. As a new mother herself, Kimi recognized what she and other parents were missing – a modern drop-in concept, where children learn through creative arts and hands-on play. To Kimi, this meant no electronics, healthy food choices, and a safe, non-toxic environment. In our new work from home (or wherever!) environment, busy families need the flexibility and peace of mind that Kids Garden provides.

Kimi and her husband, Paul, both work in energy and have called Houston home since 2013. After Paul attended business school at Rice University, they moved into the Rice U area and determined what better place to plant their first Kids Garden than in the community they love. Paul and Kimi welcomed their first child, Estelle, in May 2021.

Ms. Charlotte is Steamboat Kids Garden’s Director and Owner. Charlotte was camping with one of her best friends, Maren, shortly after her first child was born. Maren was telling her about this great Creative Arts learning center she had opened. At the time Charlotte’s husband and she had opposite work schedules, and they juggled the care of their infant son without childcare. However, there were times they needed some help and there was no drop-in child care available in Steamboat. So, as she sat talking to Maren that night they agreed we should open a Kids Garden in Steamboat. Within the next year and half the wheels were set in motion, and Steamboat became the first franchise. Charlotte’s background is in Business and Marketing. Once Kids Garden opened she returned to college for Early Childhood classes and became Director Certified. Since the doors opened January 25, 2016, the Harriman family welcomed another baby on January 25, 2017. It was a wild first year of business ownership!! Charlotte’s favorite part about being a teacher at Kids Garden, besides bringing her kids to work, is seeing the local children that come through the center grow and blossom through our program!!

Mrs. Kasey is the owner and director of Kids Garden Summerville. It wasn’t until she discovered Kids Garden Charleston for her son, Stratton, that she found the peace of mind that she had been looking for, for years. She knew from the first day at Kids Garden that she needed to bring this concept to the families of Summerville!
