Thea Manchester
Afternoon Manager, Mount Pleasant Kids Garden

Thea Manchester: Kids Play Garden Teacher

Where are you originally from?
Wyoming, Ohio.

What drew you to Kids Play Garden?
Having a baby and deciding to go back to work or stay home was really tough. My sister, Maren, opened Play Garden in 2013 and her son has developed amazing social and emotional skills at a young age. Working with children most of my life made it really easy to join the family business and become a Play Garden Teacher!

Any favorite memories so far?
I love working with siblings in the center! Sometimes they can be more challenging because they have different boundaries at home, but mostly they play well together, engage with new friends together and generally look out for each other as they make their way through the center.

What is something funny or interesting about you?
I have a vast and random knowledge of song lyrics. Pretty much any song I’ve heard more than once, I can sing along to.

What is an accomplishment you are proud of?
Professionally, I have worked with successful real estate developments and helped to showcase the revitalization of Park Circle, North Charleston. Also, my husband and I started our own handmade cutting board business in 2013 and have had great fun and success. But something I will always be proud of is making it through natural child birth!

What did you want to be “when you grew up?”
A camp counselor.

Carol Peckham
Afternoon Manager, Charleston Kids Garden

Carol Peckham: Charleston Kids Play Garden Manager

Where are you originally from?
San Diego, CA

How did you end up at Play Garden?
I had recently moved to Charleston and was applying to jobs that dealt with children when Play Garden found me. I love everything about working here and seeing so many of the children grow and create their own personalities!

What do you enjoy most about working here?
Seeing all the children grow and hearing the funny things they have to say.

Any favorite memories so far?
It’s hard to pick just one favorite memory, but I’d probably say the moment children started asking other staff where “Miss Carol” was when I was home visiting my family. That moment made me feel like I was really making an impact on these children.

What is something funny or interesting about you?
I am an Irish twin!

What did you want to be “when you grew up?”
When I was younger I always wanted to be a teacher and a mom when I grew up.

Kelcey Davis
Office Manager

Kelcey Davis: Kids Play Garden Office Manager

Where are you originally from?
I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and moved to South Carolina my senior year of high school.

How did you end up at Kids Play Garden?
I was working at a local gym and a girl who worked with me told me about it. When I first walked in to drop off my resume I fell in love with it! I still remember meeting Ms. Michelle, the Mount Pleasant Director that day, and she soon became one of my good friends! 🙂

What do you enjoy most about working here?
I love the positive energy of all of the people who work here. Everyone is passionate about children and learning. I also love that we are eco friendly and Montessori and Reggio based. Maren is a true visionary and an incredible boss.

What is something interesting about you?
I started working here as a part time job but Maren has allowed me to continue to evolve in my role in the business. I started off as a teacher on the floor but most of the time you will see me running between locations and working in the office as we continue to improve and grow.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be everything under the sun! For some reason I loved playing waitress but as an adult I realized that it wasn’t as glamorous in the real world. Apparently I told my mom when I was three that I wanted to be an artist. I always had colored pencils and a notepad with me at all times, which is another reason I love Kids Play Garden and it’s emphasis on creative play!
